Secrets To Protective Styling

Do you ever get tired of doing your hair every day? Have you felt like you want to give your hair a break from the daily wear and tear? Try a protective style to give you and your hair a break.

Protective style is a title given to styles that don’t require you to manipulate your hair daily and allows your hair to be protected from external elements that cause breakage. Protective styles include braids, twists, updos, and even weave extensions. Here are a few of our secrets to keep your curls healthy while wearing a protective style.

Before you get a protective style, wash, condition and moisturize your hair. This is to ensure your hair is in the best condition for a long term style. If you are installing extensions, consult with a stylist first and make sure they don’t braid your hair too tight. It’s not a protective style if it does more damage than good.

Follow a healthy hair regimen to clean and moisturize your hair while wearing a protective style. We suggest the Dirty Curl Cleansing & Conditioning Clay which works great on loose hair as well as braids and twists. Make sure your hair fully dries after every wash. Curly hair can take a long time to dry and even longer when in a protective style. If your hair doesn't fully dry it may lead to mildew...and that’s not sexy. Oil your scalp to keep it healthy by using a healing oil to reduce any flakes and sooth an irritated scalp. Try the Flower Bomb Hair Growth Oil which is packed with oils to maintain a healthy scalp and has an applicator tip, perfect for those hard to reach areas. Before going to bed, tuck your hair and edges in a satin bonnet to avoid friction from cotton bedding.

Last, don’t wear a protective style for more than 6 consecutive weeks, max 8 weeks. Once you’ve taken down your protective style, show your curls some love and treat them to a spa day that includes a deep conditioner(for the ultimate deep conditioner mix the Dirty Curl Cleansing & Conditioning Clay with the Knotty Nectar Leave-In Conditioner and coat with a little  Flower Bomb Hair Growth Oil then cover with a plastic cap and sit under a warm dryer for 30 minutes).
